About Gambling

Local government has a legislative responsibility to advocate the interests of its local communities to other communities and governments. Victorian councils are aware of the potentially harmful effects of gambling on individuals and families, and as an advocate, the local government sector will continue to play a key role in this issue.

The Victorian Government released its Taking Action on Problem Gambling five year strategy in October 2006 to provide a broad framework to guide the development and implementation of initiatives to combat problem gambling in Victoria.

At this time the Government made a commitment to strengthen the role local government plays in the location of electronic gaming machines by requiring a planning permit for all gaming machines.

Several councils have developed local policies to influence location and extent of gaming in municipality, or improve understanding and management of gaming in municipality.
