Councillor Development Program 2009
The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) will again be offering its induction program for newly elected and re-elected councillors ollowing the November 2008 council elections. Councillor Fundamentals comprises a free half-day workshop followed by four full-day workshops in regional locations across four, each targeting one of the core skills needed to perform the duties of a councillor. Download the brochure with early information about the MAV's program to assist your councils' planning for councillor induction. More detail on the content of each workshop and pricing will be provided closer to the elections.

For the brochure please see the Resources section below.

Discounted Councillor Development Credits
The MAV is offering councils the opportunity to purchase discounted councillor development credits with their 2007/08 MAV subscription. A council may, with a single resolution approve the purchase of a year’s worth of MAV councillor professional development and events.

Councils that decide to take up the pre-payment offer will:
  • Receive a pool of credit points to be redeemed by any or all of its councillors when they attend designated MAV workshops and events (see list over) during the 2007/08 financial year;
  • Save around 10% on workshops and events; and
  • Eliminate the need for approvals, purchase orders, credit cards or cheques and reduce the time and effort of councillors and councillor support staff.

Councillor Development Weekend (CDW)

A highlight of the councillor professional development calendar is the MAV Councillor Development Weekend. Held in July each year, it attracts on average 200 councillors. The program is tailored exclusively for local government elected representatives and the program blends topical issues affecting the sector, skill and capability development for the role of councillor, with opportunities for networking and time-out activities.

The format comprises a Friday night welcome dinner, high profile keynote speakers, skill development workshops, Saturday night dinner and entertainment. An attractive feature of the weekend is that partners and children are welcome and a Kids' Club and a Partner’s Program are offered.
