Local government services

​Victorian councils receive funding of $8.7 billion annually to provide more than 100 different services to the communities they represent.

Council services include:

  • environment services such as greenhouse gas mitigation, waste management, and natural resource and coastal management
  • health services such as aged care programs, disability support and food regulations
  • emergency management services such as disaster response and recovery
  • transport and infrastructure services such as roads, footpaths, traffic management, telecommunications and leisure facilities
  • planning and building services such as land use regulation, economic development and environmental conservation
  • social and community services such as early childhood services, housing, libraries and employment.

Service delivery statistics

Each year local government in Victoria:

  • services 130,501 kilometres of roads and bridges (approximately 85 per cent of Victoria’s total road network)
  • provides 827,000 maternal and child health consultations
  • delivers 553,000 immunisations to preschool and secondary school children
  • delivers 1.8 million meals a year to home care recipients
  • provides 4.6 million hours of home assistance, property maintenance, personal and respite care
  • spends over $50 million on public street lighting
  • loans 45 million physical and digital items from libraries to 1 million registered users
  • maintains 44,350 parks and reserves
  • decides over 56,551 planning permit applications
  • maintains more than 15,000 sporting facilities
  • collects 1 million tonnes of kerbside waste
  • collects 600,000 tonnes of recyclable materials
  • collects 400,000 tonnes of organic waste
  • conducts 17,249 visits to tobacco retailers, eating establishments, licensed premises, and workplaces
  • registers more than 63,800 fixed and mobile food businesses.
