Tracking What Works: Voluntary activity, community strengthening and local government
The Tracking What Works report was launched in 2007. It details voluntary activity and the role of local government, and was developed by the Centre for Citizenship and Human Rights (CCHR) at Deakin University for the MAV.  In a process led by Professor Sue Kenny, Director of CCHR, 15 Victorian councils in rural, regional, interface and metropolitan locations agreed to share their experience and insights in relation to voluntary activity. The report offers:
  • practical local government case studies
  • commentary on contemporary approaches to voluntary activity and community strengthening
  • insights on national and international thinking on volunteering and community strengthening
  • suggestions for practical steps forward for councils

Workshop Notes and Presentations
Capacity Development Events

The Local and Regional Resource Networks project has hosted several events for the local government sector addressing the role and development of voluntary activity in building healthy sustainable communities, including Australian and overseas perspectives. These activities have focused on the challenges and opportunities posed for local government in responding  strategically to changing patterns of formal and non formal community participation.

A briefing was held in October 2006 on Tracking What Works, a report developed for the MAV by the Centre for Citizenship and Human Rights at Deakin University. Tracking What Works provides a framework to reflect on the experience of councils and communities dealing with the impact of changing community participation patterns and the need for new ways to stimulate and support voluntary activity at a community level.
