Understanding Local Government

November 2011

​This program helps new and long-standing council staff to understand local government, its role, responsibilities and history.

The program examines local governments place within our federal systems and its legislative relationship with the state government. It examines how councils are funded, structured and governed.

The program explores issues of governance, community engagement and the role of the council and councillors. It looks at future challenges and emerging issues for the sector.

This event:

  • is highly interactive using a range of learning tools such as case studies, quizes, hypotheticals and group discussion
  • is designed and facilitated by an experienced, qualified and engaging facilitator
  • provides the ideal opportunity for participants to talk and share, build relationships and increase understanding

Feedback from participants has been consistently positive about their enjoyment and learning.

This event is not just an induction program. Participants have included people on their first day but also many others with up to 20 years’ experience. All take away new knowledge and insights.
