The Mayoral Training Program provided a series of professional development training events designed for mayors and deputy mayors.

Program Information

The Mayoral Training Program targets the special skills needed to perform the role of mayor and deputy mayor.

The program will provide a series of professional development training events designed for mayors and deputy mayors. Some of these training events topics are:

  • Senior leadership
  • Chairing council meetings
  • Managing relationships
  • Managing and modelling good conduct
  • Mayor's Annual Plan – how to plan, map and achieve annual action plan or KPIs
  • Conflict of Interest – what is it and how to manage conflicts of interest
  • Senior negotiation and Influencing capabilities
  • Media skills training for mayors and deputy mayors.

These events are designed to draw out the real world challenges and experiences of mayors and provide a rich opportunity to learn, debate, challenge and understand the complexities of being mayor.
The program draws on the shared wisdom of current and past mayors and explores relevant mayor/CEO dynamics and examines the requirements under the Act, community expectations and the many roles and practical challenges of the position.

Attendees will obtain:

  • a deeper understanding of the role of mayor insights into the practical realities of the role
  • a stronger grounding in the critical challenges of the mayoral year
  • the opportunity to set goals
  • a unique opportunity to work through critical issues with people grappling with the same issues

Chairing a Council Meeting

A one day workshop, addressing the management of Council meetings as prescribed in the Local Government Act, 1989 and Council local laws. This workshop will provide you with the confidence and skills to manage all Council meetings; from managing procedural motions, to knowing the rules for voting, abstaining and divisions and having a good workable understanding of local laws meeting procedures.

Round Table Two - Mayor-up!

The morning session will cover how mayors need to step up and lead through difficult times (such as natural disasters, community crises as well as managing difficult situations in council). In the afternoon we will follow on by exploring the mayor’s role as an advocate for council and how to use your term to successfully lobby and positively influence. Includes a Q&A panel with leaders who can provide practical insight on these topics, from personal and professional experience.

Round Table Three - Good governance for mayors and reflection for the second half of mayoral term

The morning will cover everything mayors need to know about governance; the good, bad and ugly! Topics covered include managing and modelling good conduct, Conflict of Interest, and the code of conduct. The session includes a frank discussion of case studies across local government and a Q&A with a panel of compliance experts. Following this session, mayors will have the chance to reflect on their term and recalibrate their action plan for the remainder of their term and beyond.
