Event Description

The 2018 Victorian Local Government Multicultural Issues Network (VLGMIN) Forum will explore ways to strengthen council’s engagement practices in support of the civic participation of our new arrivals whether they are humanitarian entrants, those seeking asylum or skilled migrants. We’ll seek to find ways to increase civic participation through exploring current research, examining local government approaches to engagement and by highlighting examples of good practice.

Civic participation is “the non-government and not-for-profit groups and organisations that have a presence in public life, expressing the interests of their members and others in society”. It is a means to achieve democratic values of equality and responsiveness in policy making. It may increase “social capital”, the resources an individual or a group derives from relationships of mutual acquaintance, recognition, and cooperation. Local government has a pivotal role in fostering and supporting the civic participation of residents.

City of Greater Dandenong will host the forum at the newly refurbished Springvale Town Hall, located at 397 - 405 Springvale Road, Springvale on Thursday 11 October 2018.
