Councillor Development Weekend

The Councillor Development Weekend is designed for newly elected councillors and re-elected councillors. It is a weekend forum to participate in sector-based workshops that outline the role and responsibilities of councillors, coupled with inspirational key note speakers from a range of celebrated Australians.

This is an ideal forum for building and strengthening relationships, robust discussions, leadership inspiration and family activities.

2015 forum participants enjoyed inspirational presentations from:

  • 2012 Australian National Living Treasure Dr Karl Kruszelnicki
  • 2015 Australian of the Year Rosie Batty.

Workshops from the 2015 Councillor Development Weekend included topics such as:

  • finance, rates and economic outlook
  • tolerance, free speech and terrorism
  • climate change
  • leadership
  • understanding and responding to community campaigns (against council)
  • managing relationships
  • CEO KPIs.

Family activities were organised in the 2015 program including:

  • challenges of being married to a councillor
  • Kids Club.

The next Councillor Development Weekend will be held in July 2017.
