MAV President and Board elected (4 Mar)

4/03/2011
Cr Bill McArthur from Golden Plains Shire has been re-elected as President of the MAV for the next two years.

Cr McArthur said, “I am very excited and humbled to be re-elected to the position of President of the MAV from such a high calibre field of candidates.

“I look forward to serving local government in this role alongside both my new and returning Board colleagues, the MAV CEO and staff, and councils across Victoria.

“Together we will deal with the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

“Key priorities for me will be to advocate the need for the State Government to consult with local government as a key stakeholder in decision making; and to continue to represent the collective and influential voice of local government across Victoria responsibly, ethically and passionately.”

Victorian municipalities also voted to elect 12 regional MAV Board representatives. Successful candidates from eight contested Board regions were:

  • Metro central region: Cr Gaetano Greco (Darebin)
  • Metro west region: Cr John Sipek (Moonee Valley)
  • Metro south east region: Cr Coral Ross (Boroondara)
  • Interface region: Cr Mary Lalios (Whittlesea)
  • Rural north east region: Cr Lisa Mahood (Wodonga)
  • Rural south central region: Cr David Clark (Pyrenees)
  • Rural north west region: Cr Reid Mather (Buloke)
  • Rural Gippsland region: Cr Jeff Amos (Wellington).

They will join a further four regional MAV Board members elected unopposed last month:

  • Cr Rod Fyffe, City of Greater Bendigo (rural north central region - incumbent Board member)
  • Cr Ken Gale, Moyne Shire Council (rural south west region - incumbent Board member)
  • Cr Geoff Lake, Monash City Council (metro southern region - incumbent Board member)
Cr Geoff Gough, Manningham City Council (metro east region - incumbent Board member)

The MAV President is a popularly elected position from the 78 elected MAV Representatives who comprise State Council (the governing body of the MAV). Board members represent their regional grouping of councils and are elected by MAV Representatives from within their region.
