Public Libraries Ministerial Advisory Council (25 Nov)

25/11/2011
We have participated in the first meeting of the Public Libraries Ministerial Advisory Council (MAC), which was held at Parliament House on 22 November.

The MAV is represented by Cr Rod Fyffe (alternate Rob Spence), with Clare Hargreaves attending as an observer.

The MAC has been tasked to comprehensively review the role of Victorian public libraries. As part of this, the MAC Chair and Deputy will conduct extensive consultations with councils, regional library corporations, other stakeholders and the public from March to April 2012. The scope of the review was discussed and adopted at the first MAC meeting.

The key outcome proposed will be a report encapsulating “Strategic Directions and Future Plan for Public Libraries to 2025 with costed priorities" – anticipated to be completed by early 2013. The State proposes that the development of an appropriate funding model will follow.

The MAV will be providing input to the review to ensure that an outcome is achieved for local government in relation to funding issues, and will continue to advocate for the development of an ongoing sustainable funding agreement.
