​An important aspect of capability improvement is the ongoing measurement of performance against realistic standards.

We are developing effective performance measurement regimes for emergency management in local government that meet internal and external requirements.

Performance baseline survey

A small number of key performance measures will be developed to avoid imposing additional reporting workload on municipal emergency management staff.

In order to inform the selection of key measures, a more comprehensive baseline survey will be undertaken to provide a detailed snapshot of the current capabilities of the sector.

Future activities

Following analysis of results from the baseline survey, key performance measures will be selected including:

• clear definitions of the performance indicators
• procedures for capturing and maintaining the necessary data
• data definitions and procedures for reporting internally and externally
• support and training for council personnel in implementing the performance indicators
• support for trialling and review of the performance indicators and associated reports
