Collaborating closely with the Victorian Government, we ensure a robust food safety regulatory system that protects consumers’ health without overly burdening business with regulatory red-tape.
With funding assistance from the Department of Health, we:
- chair and support the Department of Health & MAV Food Safety Coordination Project Steering Committee
- provide advice to the Department of Health about the implementation of changes affecting local government as a result of the Food Amendment (Regulation Reform) Act 2009
- project manage, on behalf of the Department of Health, the adjustment of IT systems so councils can more easily meet mandatory reporting requirements
- project manage, on behalf of the Department of Health, the building of an online single registration system for temporary and mobile food businesses
Review of MoU between food safety regulators
A review of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between food regulators in Victoria is being undertaken by the Victorian Committee of Food Regulators.
About the MoU
Signed in 2004, the current MoU outlines the different roles and jurisdictions of the various agencies involved in food regulation, namely the Department of Health, PrimeSafe, Dairy Food Safety Victoria and local government.
Following a recommendation by the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission, the Victorian Committee of Food Regulators was established in 2010. One of its key tasks is to review the current MoU to ensure it continues to be relevant to achieving a cooperative approach to protecting public health and applying food regulation in Victoria.
As councils register most food businesses in Victoria (except for meat, seafood and dairy food businesses licensed by PrimeSafe and Dairy Food Safety Victoria) your council has an operational interest in the contents of the MoU and its accompanying schedules.
Draft MoU & schedules
A revised draft MoU is available for councils to comment on before we sign it on behalf of local government. Comments on the proposed MoU can be emailed to Rosemary Hancock at rhancock@mav.asn.au by Friday 25 May.
The Victorian Committee of Food Regulators prepared a discussion paper about the issues covered by the existing MOU and new areas proposed to be included.
