Federal election – National local government campaign

Publish date:

The MAV has actively participated in development of the Australia Local Government Association’s (ALGA) federal election advocacy campaign.

The ALGA election document All politics is local (PDF - 686KB) was launched to federal politicians this week in Canberra. It outlines 12 initiatives sought from federal political parties on behalf of local government nationally, including restoration of Financial Assistance Grants to at least one per cent of Commonwealth taxation revenue.

Other commitments sought include an increase in Roads to Recovery funding to $800 million per year, a $300 million community infrastructure program, a $200 million local government climate change partnership fund and $200 million for a higher productivity investment plan.

A recent poll run in an omnibus survey by YouGov Galaxy confirmed that 81 per cent of Australians agree that political candidates should focus on local issues and local communities at the next federal election.

Further information, resource materials and activities to get involved in the ALGA campaign will be sent to Victorian councils by the MAV in coming weeks. Find out more about ALGA's federal election campaign at
