Procurement emerges as a powerful driver of social and sustainable outcomes in local government
Procurement is undergoing a significant transformation in local government, evolving from a traditional purchasing function into a strategic tool for delivering economic, social and environmental value for communities.
"Every procurement decision has the potential to create value well beyond the contract itself," said Daniel Skelton, Manager - MAV Procurement. "Councils are increasingly using procurement to support local businesses, create employment opportunities, strengthen social outcomes and advance sustainability goals. The conversation is no longer just about what councils buy, but the impact that buying power can have on communities."
As expectations on local government continue to grow, councils are looking for new ways to maximise value from public spending while delivering measurable community benefits. Procurement is increasingly recognised as one of the most effective levers available to achieve these outcomes.
Reflecting this shift, the Municipal Association of Victoria's Procurement Leaders Forum 2026 will take a fresh approach this year with the theme Social and Sustainable Procurement in Local Government.
Bringing together procurement practitioners, executives, suppliers and sector leaders from across Victoria, the forum will showcase innovative approaches, practical case studies and real-world examples of councils using procurement to strengthen local economies, support diverse suppliers and drive positive environmental and social impact.
The forum will explore emerging trends and challenges facing the sector, while providing delegates with practical insights and opportunities to share knowledge and build professional networks.
Hosted by MAV Procurement, the forum reinforces the organisation's commitment to supporting councils through capability development, collaboration, advocacy and sector leadership.
