Tackling harmful gender stereotypes through sport (2026)

Why this is important

Sport has a unique ability to bring people together and shape positive community culture. Recognising this, Mornington Peninsula Shire partnered with Tomorrow Man to deliver A Night with the Blokes – a club development workshop designed to engage men in promoting gender equality, preventing violence against women, and fostering more respectful and inclusive sporting environments.

Targeting local sporting clubs, the workshop encouraged healthier expressions of masculinity, positive leadership and allyship, recognising that equitable and respectful environments benefit people of all genders, both on and off the field.

The session provided a safe space for participants to have honest conversations about how men can better care for themselves, their mates, their families and their communities. Special guest Darcy Moore, captain of Collingwood Football Club, shared personal reflections on leadership, vulnerability and the importance of looking out for others. Participants also explored topics such as masculinity, isolation and seeking support during difficult times, demonstrating how open conversations can be a catalyst for lasting cultural change.

The response from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Participants highlighted the value of genuine connection and meaningful discussion, with many expressing interest in practical resources and ongoing education to help strengthen wellbeing, inclusion and respectful club culture within their sporting clubs.

Mornington Peninsula Shire has submitted this initiative as part of consultation on the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022-2032 Second Action Plan, reinforcing the importance of recognising primary prevention as a national priority and ensuring it is backed by long-term funding to support meaningful, lasting change.

Call to action

The initiative demonstrates the important role local governments can play in primary prevention by engaging men and boys in settings where they live, work and play. It also highlights the need for continued investment in policy development and programs that support sporting clubs to create safer, more inclusive and respectful environments.
