Gender Equality Act 2020

The Gender Equality Act (2020) (the Act) was introduced to the Victorian parliament in March 2020 and commenced on 31 March 2021.

Councils, along with the Victorian public sector and universities, are now required to take positive action towards achieving workplace gender equality, and to consider and promote gender equality in their community facing policies, programs and services.

The Act also established the Commission for Gender Equality in the Public Sector. Dr Niki Vincent was appointed as the inaugural commissioner and has since been reappointed for a further four-year term (2024-2027).
